The U.S. is the fourth largest wine producing country in the world. Much of it from the west coast. California alone produces double the wine of Australia, which is the 5th largest producer. American wines have achieved world-class status in a very short amount of time. Wine in California got its start from Spanish missionaries and then gold rush immigrants but really didn't get onto the world scene until the late 1960's and early 70's. Shortly after that Oregon and Washington followed suit and currently there is a huge variety of world class wines and wineries coming from the west coast. California produces some of the world's greatest Cabernet, Merlot, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines. Washington is highly regarded for incredible Cabernet, Merlot, Syrah and Riesling. Oregon 's Pinot Noir are truly world class and can rival some of Burgundies best. Yet the rest of the U.S. shouldn't be forgotten. States such as New York, Virginia, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan are starting to overcome climactic obstacles and are coming into their own as far as wine quality and tourism.
